I volunteer as a genealogy researcher for the Kentucky U.S. Colored Troops Project. One of the soldiers I researched, Henry Stewart, is featured in a traveling exhibit honoring the memories of ten USCT Civil War soldiers from Kentucky. Henry Stewart enlisted as Private Henry Stith (he was enslaved by Richard Stith, of Hardin County, KY) and changed his name to Henry Stewart when he left the Army. He married Laura Berry in 1867, and later became a minister. Their descendants went on to become quite successful.
The traveling exhibit is currently at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, KY and will be on display until February 2026 before moving on to another location within Kentucky. Re-enactors were used to voice the stories of the soldiers, accessible via QR codes posted on the display.
If you happen to be near the Ali Center, check it out!
